Winnie the Pooh… who would have thought we would have had a week of quotes out of him?!
“Don’t underestimate the value of Doing Nothing, of just going along, listening to all the things you can’t hear, and not bothering.”
This is something that I have had to learn how to do but have mastered and now understand the power of doing nothing…
Over the Christmas holidays I read a lot, one of the books I read was by Brene Brown Daring Greatly (I highly recommend you read this book) in it she discussed how when we are in a ‘snooze you lose’ frame of mind you are less likely to be creative and innovative. When people are in a ‘winner takes all’ environment the levels of competition halt people’s desire to try something that might fail.
When you learn to stop, take time out, do nothing, think about nothing (or nothing important anyway) your creativity starts to come back in to play.
When I start to feel stressed and overwhelmed about all the things I need to get done I don’t actually get anything done. When I take some time out, all of a sudden words come to me, I have the urge to write (usually these emails and usually at 10pm when I am meant to be going to bed).
There are times when you need to just shut off from the world. If you are thinking that you don’t have time to do that, you need to trust me… You WILL be more productive when you come back. You WILL get more done and it will be better quality.
Try it… take some time out to do absolutely nothing and see how much better you are when you come back.
I am aware that many of you have just been off for Christmas holidays, but how much of that time off was actually taking time out?
