You don’t need to be fit to go to the gym or to have a personal trainer.
A very common comment or excuse I hear from many women (and some men) is that they are not fit enough to come along to a class or to start personal training.
I understand why many people feel that way.
For everyone it is different but there is a level of
- Embarrassment that they might not be able to do what is being asked of them. There really isn’t anything to be embarrassed about, everyone starts somewhere and if you are off your ass doing something, it is better than sitting on the couch making up excuses (that is what you should be embarrassed about).
- A misunderstanding of what they are actually capable of. Most people are surprised as hell how well they manage when they start. It is fantastic to see someone do a task and look really pleased with themselves as the penny starts to drop that just maybe they can do this after all.
- A personal trainer is there to help you, guide you and push you just a little bit more so you can really see what you are capable of – in my opinion a trainer should never push you to the point of being sick that is not success, that is your body responding with ‘you have gone too far’. Your sessions should be tailored to your needs and your ability.
Starting on your health and fitness journey can be nerve wracking, walking in to a room of strangers that you see as ‘knowing what to do’ maybe they do know now, but there was a day in their life that they didn’t and they were exactly where you are now.
I was that person too, scared to go to the class so watched from a distance for weeks before getting the courage to walk in the room to ask if it was okay to take part. I was terrified the first time I went along for a personal training session, I had no idea what the guy was going to ask me to do and I hadn’t selected him, the gym I joined gave you a couple of free sessions when you signed up. Turned out I really enjoyed it, I stayed a member and then made my way in to the world of fitness as a career for myself…
